The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (Nonm) has published its first research journal which provides nurses and midwives with a platform to share locally-generated evidence and professional knowledge.
The journal’s chief editor Genesis Chorwe-Sungani said in Lilongwe on Friday that the publication seeks to fill the gap on the limited amount of nursing and midwifery research published locally. He said the situation left professionals heavily reliant on evidence generated elsewhere.
“The journal is established in response to limited locally published research in nursing and midwifery, which has left professionals relying heavily on evidence published elsewhere,” he said.

Sungani said nurses and midwives would be able to submit research papers for publication, provided they meet the journal’s quality requirements.
Nonm executive director Chifundo Zimba said the organisation was excited to have a dedicated publication for the profession, describing it as part of its strategic plan.
“As Nonm, we are excited to have this journal released. This is in line with our strategic plan,” she said.
Zimba said the journal will strengthen Nonm’s focus on research in practice by giving nurses and midwives a platform to generate and share knowledge drawn from their professional experiences.
She said partners supported the development of the journal through initiatives such as capacity building for editors and mentorship from the Malawi Medical Journal in journal management.
Zimba said locally generated evidence will help advance nursing and midwifery while also benefitting the wider public.
The first issue will be available online through open access, but Nonm said it is working on introducing a subscription model in future to support the journal’s financial sustainability.
